The Mossy Gecko (Gekko ulikovskii), also known as the Vietnamese Mossy Gecko, is a remarkable arboreal species famous for its incredible camouflage that resembles moss, bark, and lichen. Native to the humid forests of Vietnam, these geckos are nocturnal, shy, and prefer densely planted environments with high humidity and plenty of cover. Mossy Geckos are best suited for keepers with some experience due to their environmental needs, but with proper care, they can live long, healthy lives—often 10 to 15 years in captivity.
Mossy Gecko Care Guide:
Enclosure Size:
Juveniles: Minimum 18×18×24 inch vertical enclosure.
Adults: Minimum 18×18×36 inch or larger.
A tall glass or PVC terrarium with good ventilation is ideal to replicate their arboreal habitat.
Substrate:
Coconut fiber, cypress mulch, or a bioactive soil mix works well to retain moisture.
Add leaf litter and sphagnum moss to help maintain humidity and provide a natural environment.
Avoid dry substrates.
Hides & Enrichment:
Provide cork bark, branches, vines, and dense foliage (live or artificial).
Create multiple hiding spots at different heights to reduce stress.
A heavily planted enclosure helps them feel secure.
Humidity:
Humidity: 70–90%
Mist the enclosure daily or use an automatic misting system.
In UAE homes with air conditioning, humidity can drop quickly — monitor with a hygrometer and mist more frequently if needed.
Ensure good airflow to prevent stagnant air.
Lighting & Temperature:
UVB: Low-output UVB (2.0–5.0) is recommended for overall health.
Day Temperature: 22–26°C
Night Temperature: 18–22°C
Avoid high temperatures — Mossy Geckos prefer cooler, forest-like conditions.
Keep the enclosure away from direct AC airflow.
Diet:
Food: Live insects such as crickets, small dubia roaches, and occasional worms.
Feeding Schedule:
Juveniles: Feed every day or every other day.
Adults: Feed 2–3 times per week.
Supplementation:
Dust insects with calcium regularly and provide calcium with D3 and multivitamins once weekly.
Water & Hydration:
Provide a shallow water dish at all times.
Mossy Geckos often drink water droplets from leaves after misting — ensure regular misting.
Refresh water daily.
Handling:
Mossy Geckos are shy and delicate and generally do not enjoy handling.
Limit handling to reduce stress and observe them as display animals.
Mossy Geckos are unique, beautifully camouflaged reptiles that thrive in lush, humid environments. With proper humidity, cool temperatures, and a well-planted enclosure, they can flourish and make a fascinating addition for keepers who appreciate naturalistic setups and nocturnal behavior.
