The African Bullfrog (Pyxicephalus adspersus), also known as the Pixie Frog, is one of the largest frogs in the world, with males reaching over 20 cm. Native to the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, African Bullfrogs spend much of their time burrowed and emerge to feed with a huge appetite. They are hardy, impressive display animals, and with proper care they can live 20 years or more.
African Bullfrog Care Guide:
Enclosure Size:
Juveniles: Minimum 40 x 30 x 30 cm enclosure.
Adults: Minimum 90 x 45 x 45 cm enclosure.
A glass or plastic enclosure with a secure, ventilated lid is ideal.
Substrate:
Use 8–10 cm of coconut fiber or a soil mix that holds moisture and allows burrowing.
Avoid gravel and sand to prevent impaction.
Humidity:
Maintain humidity between 60–80%.
Mist daily and keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged.
Lighting & Temperature:
UVB: Not required, but low-level UVB (2.0) can be beneficial.
Ambient Temperature: 26–29°C during the day.
Night Drop: No lower than 21°C.
Use a heat mat on the side of the enclosure regulated by a thermostat.
Diet:
Food: Carnivorous—offer live insects such as crickets, dubia roaches, and earthworms; adults can occasionally be offered a pinkie mouse.
Feeding Schedule:
Juveniles: Feed every 1–2 days.
Adults: Feed every 3–5 days. Avoid overfeeding, as this species is prone to obesity.
Supplementation: Dust insects with calcium 2–3 times a week and with multivitamins once a week.
Water & Hydration:
Provide a large, shallow water dish with dechlorinated water and change it daily.
Handling:
Handling is not recommended—African Bullfrogs have sensitive skin and a powerful bite.
If handling is necessary, use clean, wet hands or gloves.
African Bullfrogs are bold, long-lived, and full of character. With proper care, they make a truly impressive addition to any amphibian lover’s collection.
