Budgett’s Frog (Lepidobatrachus laevis), often called the “Hippo Frog” for its wide mouth and round body, is a mostly aquatic frog native to the Gran Chaco region of South America. Known for its comical appearance and big personality, Budgett’s Frog spends most of its time sitting in shallow water waiting for food. With proper care, they can live 10–15 years.
Budgett’s Frog Care Guide:
Enclosure Size:
Juveniles: Minimum 40 x 30 x 30 cm enclosure.
Adults: Minimum 60 x 45 x 30 cm enclosure.
House one frog per enclosure, as Budgett’s Frogs will eat tank mates.
Water Setup:
Keep the enclosure mostly water, about 5–10 cm deep, so the frog can sit with its head above the surface.
Use dechlorinated water and provide a small land area or floating platform.
A gentle filter helps, but frequent partial water changes are essential to keep the water clean.
Lighting & Temperature:
UVB: Not required, but low-level UVB (2.0) can be beneficial.
Water & Air Temperature: 25–29°C.
Night Drop: No lower than 21°C.
Use a submersible heater or a heat mat regulated by a thermostat.
Diet:
Food: Carnivorous—offer feeder fish, earthworms, crickets, and roaches.
Feeding Schedule:
Juveniles: Feed every 1–2 days.
Adults: Feed 2–3 times a week. Avoid overfeeding.
Supplementation: Dust insects with calcium 2–3 times a week.
Handling:
Handling is not recommended—Budgett’s Frogs have sensitive skin and can deliver a painful bite.
If handling is necessary, use clean, wet hands or gloves.
Budgett’s Frogs are quirky, entertaining, and easy to care for with clean water and a meaty diet. They make a fun and unusual addition to any amphibian lover’s collection.
