Axanthic Bullsnake

Bullsnakes are impressive, hardy, non-venomous snakes known for their bold patterns and large size. They may hiss loudly when young or startled, but they usually settle down well with regular, gentle handling. Here’s a comprehensive guide for feeding and caring for bullsnakes:

Bullsnake Care Guide:

Enclosure Size:
Hatchlings: 10–20-gallon tank.
Juveniles: 40-gallon tank.
Adults: 120 x 60 x 60 cm (4 x 2 x 2 ft) enclosure or larger, as adults commonly reach 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 ft).
Ensure a secure, escape-proof enclosure as bullsnakes are strong and skilled escape artists.

Substrate: Aspen shavings, cypress mulch, or coconut husk. Bullsnakes love to burrow, so provide a deep layer of loose substrate. Avoid cedar or pine due to harmful oils.

Hides: At least two hides: one on the warm side and one on the cool side of the enclosure. Include branches and decor for enrichment.

Humidity: 30-50% is ideal. Provide a humid hide during shedding periods.

Lighting: No UVB lighting is required, but a consistent day-night cycle (12 hours light, 12 hours dark) is recommended. Use a heat mat or ceramic heat emitter to provide a temperature gradient.

Temperature:
Warm side (basking area): 85-90°F (29-32°C).
Cool side: 72-78°F (22-26°C).
Night temperature: Do not let it drop below 65°F (18°C).

Use a thermostat to regulate heating devices and thermometers to monitor temperatures in both warm and cool zones.

Diet
Food:
Hatchlings: Pinky or fuzzy mice.
Juveniles: Small to adult mice.
Adults: Adult mice, small rats, or appropriately sized rats.
Use frozen-thawed prey to avoid injuries to the snake. Thaw completely and warm the prey to room temperature before feeding.

Feeding Schedule:
Hatchlings: Every 5-7 days.
Juveniles: Every 7-10 days.
Adults: Every 10-14 days.
Ensure prey size is no larger than the widest part of the snake’s body.
