The Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) is one of the most popular chameleon species kept in captivity due to its distinctive appearance and relatively manageable care requirements. Native to the mountains of Yemen and Saudi Arabia, this chameleon is known for the large "veil" or casque on its head, giving it a unique profile. Veiled chameleons are also known for their bright, vibrant colors, especially in males. They require a controlled environment with specific humidity, temperature, and UVB lighting conditions to thrive.

Veiled Chameleon Care Guide

Enclosure Size

Juveniles: Minimum 45 x 45 x 90 cm screened enclosure.

Adults: Minimum 60 x 60 x 120 cm (larger enclosures are always better).

Screened enclosures are recommended to ensure proper ventilation.

Substrate

• Bare-bottom
• Avoid loose substrates that could cause impaction if ingested.

Hides & Climbing

• Provide branches, vines, and live or artificial plants for climbing and creating security.
• No hides are necessary—Veiled chameleons prefer elevation over hiding.

Humidity

• Daytime Humidity: 50-70%
• Nighttime Humidity: Up to 100%
• Achieved by misting regularly.
• Mist 2-3 times daily or use an automated misting system.
• A drip system is recommended for drinking water, as Veiled chameleons do not drink from bowls.

Lighting & Temperature

• UVB: Required, use a 5.0 or 6% UVB bulb (replace every 6 months).
• Basking Spot: 29-32°C.
• Ambient Temperature: 24-27°C.
• Night Drop: No lower than 18°C.

Diet

• Food: Insects such as crickets, dubia roaches, silkworms, hornworms, etc.
• Feeding Schedule:
• Juveniles: Daily.
• Adults: Every other day.
• Supplementation:
• Calcium without D3 at every feeding.
• Calcium with D3 and multivitamins twice a month.

Water & Hydration

• They do not drink from water bowls. Provide misting and a drip system for hydration.

Handling

• Minimal handling is recommended. Veiled chameleons can become stressed easily when handled too often.
• If handling is necessary, allow the chameleon to walk onto your hand rather than grabbing it.
